Activists Continue Campaign Against Rockstar Energy Drink

Despite Threat of Lawsuits, Boycott Continues Against Drink due to Alleged Michael Savage Connection

Jun 10, 2009 Jon Pike

Activists are still advocating a boycott campaign against Rockstar Energy Drink, because of purported links to controversial radio host, Michael Savage.

Despite the threat of legal action by the corporation that owns Rockstar energy drink, activists are continuing their boycott of the energy drink that they say is linked to right-wing radio talk show host Michael Savage. Rockstar Energy Drink is helmed by the son of Savage, Russell Goldencloud Weiner and Janet Weiner, Savage’s wife is chief financial officer of the company.

Reasons For the Boycott Campaign

The boycott campaign was initiated by Charles C.C. Tsai, who explains his reasons for initiating the campaign on his Facebook page:

One month ago, my friend showed me a little article filled with quotations from Michael Savage Weiner and his son Russell Weiner. I was utterly disgusted. Then I read that Russell Weiner was the CEO of Rockstar* and his mom Janet Weiner was CFO . After more readings, I made a PERSONAL CHOICE to BOYCOTT all ROCKSTAR* products.

Savage (Weiner) and his son are co-founders of the Paul Revere Society which advocates elimination of bilingual education in all states and advocates for traditional marriage.

On his Facebook page, Tsai quote from Russell Weiner information from Rockstar’s website, which has since been taken down, and to which access via web archives has been blocked:

I was very fortunate to have been raised by two of the leading herbalists in the world, Dr. and Mrs. MICHAEL WEINER, Ph.D. ... From my earliest walking days, I remember exploring the jungles of the South Pacific on expeditions WITH MY PARENTS. ... MY FAMILY HAS taken that spirit and experience – their lifetime journey – and DEVELOPED the most complete, most unique, most powerful, and most honest energy beverage ever created: ROCKSTAR. – CEO RUSSELL GOLDENCLOUD WEINER.

Tsai claims his original Facebook page was taken down and says that if this one is taken down, others should start new pages.

Tsai was one of many people, including the website Alternet, a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, and a blogger who goes under the name wiqqable to apologize for linking Savage to Rockstar.

Further Activism in Face of the Lawsuit

Tsai, and others who are advocating a boycott of Rockstar say that while they have issued apologies for officially linking Savage and Rockstar, say they will continue their activism and advocate a boycott. The boycott is still being promoted on Tsai’s Facebook page and a separate website and blog are continuing to advocate that the product be boycotted.

The boycott has apparently had some impact as San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has returned a $25,000 donation to his re-election campaign from Rockstar.
